Reality check: Kim Kardashian's silver blonde and the Insta (nt) generation

Image
A few months ago we ran a blog showcasing how expectations of what can be achieved with hair and the somewhat warped idea we are all getting thanks to images on Instagram... https://www.haircolourstudio.co.uk/blog/post/6913033183302396819 Well things are certainly not getting any better... I feel a bit sorry for our young generation who are fed all this totally misleading information.. but it is a vicious circle that is never gonna go,.... because while there is an audience there will also always be the exhibitionists and the ones in question here are the hair stylists themselves! But mostly celeb culture.. because some of us may get it.... but others dont when you see the Kardashians changing hair colour from one day to the next... it's not because hair can do that... it is because they are wearing a wig! And when they aren't they did not have that change during the 3 hour slot you booked at the hair salon. A few weeks back we had a client who booked for a bal

Halloween : 5 easy Hair-inspired costumes

It is just 2 weeks for Halloween! and we couldn't be more excited! But did you know that even though we tend to always say that here in Europe we have slowly adopted this American holiday, it is actually  the other way round. While we now associate it with trick or treat, costumes and apple-bobbing the ancient origins are pretty far off..... 2000 years far off in fact with a Celtic festival known as Samhain, when they used to believe that ghosts would roam the earth on the 31st of October so people left food on their doorstep to ward off the ghosts but also put on masks when they left the house so they would be mistaken for fellow ghosts. In the 8th century the Christian church tuned it into all-hallows eve... which eventually was shortened to Halloween. The trick or treating we know today originates from medieval Britain with a tradition known as Guising , when young people would dress up and in return for food, wine or money they would sing, recite poetry or tell

The making of Hair Colour Studio

A lot of you have been asking what the process in putting together the salon was like. So we decided to satisfy your curiosity in this blog... We originally viewed the property in September 2016! - our initial reaction was 'what is this?' but after a breather or two, we set out to look at it with a different mind set and look beyond what was in front of us and instead look at it's potential... afterall the location was bang on where we wanted to be! 2 hours of measuring discussing, asking questions etc ensued and made an offer at the end of that... it was accepted! Exciting times ahead... we were already thinking of a Xmas opening.... little did we know that the paperwork between councils, planning permissions and solicitors would take... months and months.....and months! - till May in fact. On the plus side that also gave us plenty of time to plan things.... and even though now you know the salon as that Art Deco Miami inspired pad... the original design was mean

6 Hair Trends you want this spring / summer 2017

Summer is hopefully round the corner, and this month we are taking a look at the shapes we are going to want to sport in the hotter months of the year. It is very much a story of extremes this year. So Great Britain has gone a bit Bananarama -o-rama! Yes we've all gone a bit crazy for the comeback of the original 80s girlband,,,, so much so that they just had to add more dates on their tour! That's Totes Bananas if you think about it! So if you are trying to  figure out what to wear on the day of the concert: go full-on 80s or keep it decidedly 21K? Fear not because there is plenty of 80s coming our way this year! starting with the Faux Perm Perms were HUUGE (in all senses of the word) in the 1980s, the hair was big it was teased and most of the time it was fried too! - Chemicals were far harsher than they are today - so going down the perm-route is of course an option, but to be fair we do not really see the point when you can have your one night

why Instagram is not your (hair) friend

So a deacde ago when you and I signed up to facebook it was all exciting times and yes it was fun to figure out what to upload, and so we all started creating albums, choosing profile pictures etc.. We started stalking some people, befriended others, and perhaps unfriended some fairly quickly too! and then came twitter, and then came instagram and pinterest and snapchat ,... and there's probably something I have not quite clocked yet that has just started too! Problem is that now we are getting so manufactured that it is not just an image we put on our social media we have to aspire to creating a brand not a profile.... Social Media is a great tool - I do love it... but as a Hair Stylist social media is slowly becoming a nightmare - and it is a monster that we have created! Just like on your facebook or other social media you will upload pictures of yourself having fun and how amazing your life is (or what you would like other people to believe) pictures of you and y

12 best and worst dressed at Oscars 2017

Oscars 2017 - WOW! Sadly we will probably remember it mostly for totally the wrong reasons - or should I say reason. Let's face it - getting it wrong while presenting the award for best picture is a pretty monumental fail, but the whole idea that the wrong envelope (which was Emma Stone's winning Best actress) at such a huge event was given to the oresenters is even more dumbfounding! Poor Warren Beatty one would think,.... but actually he just passed the buck and gave it to Faye Dunaway - poor Faye! My heart does go to the whole cast and crew of La La Land that actually got to the stage to be told: 'Oh, sorry guys actually you did not win!'  - but you can only applaud La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz  (also part of the board) to stand up and making it right - pointing out the competing motion picture's win. On a personal level I did like both films, though I did prefer La La Land , for as much as Moonlight brings up very valid social issues
